About 80 percent, or 260 miles, of Rocky Mountain National Park’s trails are open to horses, mules, burros, and llamas (but not goats). Permits are required for overnight outings, as is certified weed-free hay. For rules, trail ethics, and recommendations for where to ride your own stock, go to nps.gov/romo/planyourvisit/horses.htm.
Not towing your own horse trailer? There are two locations within the park and many more nearby where you can join a scheduled ride and get guided tours lasting an hour to a full day. Inside the park, the stables at Glacier Creek and Moraine Park provide easy access and rides that meander through primitive country dappled with lakes and trout streams. Go to the concessionaire’s website (sombrero.com) for details on both stables and the trips they offer. The stables at the YMCA of the Rockies also offers guided tours for families of all sizes and abilities. Depending on length, the rides typically cost from $50 to $200.
Outside the park, the same concessionaire and others offer rides.
