Welcome in the New Year by getting outside! On January 1, Colorado Parks & Wildlife will offer free, guided hikes through many different state parks as part of the nationwide initiative America's State Parks First Day Hikes. Open to both individuals and families and led by park staff and volunteers, these excursions give participants a chance to soak in the sounds, sights and smells of nature. The hikes, available at 27 state parks across the state, are free but park visitors must possess a valid parks pass to participate.

"Getting outdoors is a great way to start the year off right - whether you're burning off holiday calories or resolving to be more active," said Bob Broscheid, Director of Colorado Parks and Wildlife. "These hikes are perfect for the Colorado lifestyle and we are excited to again be part of the national First Day Hike initiative."

The First Day Hikes initiative began more than 20 years ago in Blue Hills Reservation, a state park in Milton, Mass. Since then, the program has grown to all 50 states.

Note: Though the hikes themselves are free, park entry fees still apply. Visitors must have a valid daily parks pass or annual park pass.

Packing List for Your Hike

It’s recommended that hike participants bring water, sun protection and clothing appropriate for the weather conditions. Depending on weather and terrain, also consider bringing snowshoes, strap-on ice cleats (microspikes, hiking crampons, etc.), snacks, trekking poles, cameras, binoculars and wildlife guide books. Specific packing lists are available on state park websites.
